Remarks: Bucephalandra deep blue is a great coverage buce due to how its submerged form tends to stay rather short and spreads out in its growth being a low-growing species. Its green leaves have a blueish hue when viewed in certain lighting giving it its nickname of deep blue. Along with this attractive coloration, Bucephalandra deep blue has unique shape to its leaves that tend to be small and coin-shaped with ruffled edges. A truly interesting species of buce, it can make a great addition to many aquascapes as a midground or foreground plant
Bucephalandra are similar to Anubias in that they are epiphytic meaning that they grow on structures such as wood, rocks, or decor rather than into the soil. They should be attached to structures like this in the aquarium because if their main stem called the rhizome is buried in the substrate, it likely will rot away and the plant will die. You can attach it by gently wedging the rhiszome into the structure you want it to grow on or by using nontoxic thread, fishing line, or aquarium plant glues. When using the glue, be sure to use as little as possible and to not cover the rhizome in the glue as it will suffocate it and cause the buce to rot.
Another aspect Bucephalandra have in common with Anubias is that they typically are not very fussy plants and can do well in a wide range of parameters granted they are stable and do not have extreme fluctuations. They also can do well in low to medium light so a high end aquarium plant light is not needed, however if one is used the plant will grow much faster. Growth can further be boosted through the use of CO2 injection but it is not necessary. One thing that does set Bucephalandra apart from Anubias is that it does prefer soft to moderate hardness compared the medium to high hardness. This makes buce a great choice for softwater tanks.
