Remarks: The Cribroheros longimanus is a medium-sized cichlid from Central America. They are sand-sifting omnivores so they should be kept on a sandy substrate. Like many others within their genus, these fish are fairly peaceful with other species but very territorial among their own kind. Due to this behavior, they should be kept alone in pairs or with other species of similarly sized Central American cichlids, but not with other species of Cribroheros as to avoid hybridization.
This cichlid has earned the nickname of the ‘Red Breast Cichlid’ due to its bright red belly present on both males and females. When mature, their bodies can turn a bright yellow color with a metallic blue sheen and a tall dorsal fin. The Cribroheros longimanus is very difficult to sex but typically males are larger than females.
